Berhampur Mandi — Paddy, Vegetables & Coconut in Ganjam (Odisha)

Berhampur, the Silk City, is south Odisha's biggest trading town, and its regulated market carries the paddy of the Ganjam belt along with vegetables and the coconut that grows all along this coast. Copra — the dried coconut kernel — is the crop that surprises farmers from other districts: it is priced on moisture and mould, not on weight alone.

Paddy goes through P-PAS with a token from your PACS; vegetables are auctioned fresh each morning; coconut and copra are bought by oil millers and coconut traders who grade on kernel quality. Commission on regulated commodities is capped at 1%, with labour and weighing charged separately.

Paddy in December and January from the kharif harvest, with a smaller rabi crop; vegetables through the year; coconut and copra all year, with heavy arrivals in the dry months. Copra is graded on moisture and mould, vegetables on freshness, paddy on moisture and chaff. Ganjam's paddy is the backbone of the yard's turnover.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Bank passbook in the seller's own name
  • P-PAS token for paddy
  • Yard weighment slip and the buyer's bill

Important warnings

  • • Copra with mould or high moisture is rejected outright or cut hard; a damp lot also loses weight in storage, so drying is the whole game.
  • • Paddy procurement needs the P-PAS token. Arriving at the yard with a loaded trolley and no token wastes a day.
  • • Vegetable prices in Berhampur swing with the Chennai and Kolkata arrivals as much as with local supply.
  • • In bazaar-style trade the weighment is the point of dispute — watch the scale and take the slip every time.
  • • Legal commission rate: Maximum of 1% of the sale value for regulated commodities (commission agents) — verify the current notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Berhampur Regulated Market

  1. 1

For coconut, dry the kernel properly before selling as copra — mould is the first thing a miller rejects.

  2. 2

Grade copra by colour and dryness and keep wet and dry lots apart.

  3. 3

For paddy, register at your PACS and take the P-PAS token and centre slip.

  4. 4

For vegetables, grade, pack and reach before the morning auction thins out.

  5. 5

Weigh at the yard and take the slip; for copra, ask for the moisture reading in writing.

  6. 6

Collect the bill with each deduction on its own line and follow the payment to the bank.

Take 20 quintals of copra at ₹12,000 a quintal — ₹2,40,000 gross. A 4% cut for moisture and mould takes ₹9,600, labour about ₹800, transport ₹1,200, leaving roughly ₹2,28,400, or ₹11,420 a quintal. Properly dried copra at 1% cut would return about ₹2,35,600 — nearly ₹7,200 more on the same 20 quintals, for a few days of drying.

Local tips

Copra is a drying business before it is a selling business: split the nuts, dry the kernel to a snap, and store it off the floor in a dry room. Ask the miller for the moisture reading at the weighbridge, and never mix this season's dry copra with older stock to fill a lot — the smell and the mould give it away.

Odisha: registration & rules recap

Odisha paddy runs on the P-PAS (Paddy Procurement Automation System). Land records are verified against Bhulekh, a token is generated giving roughly one month to sell at an assigned Paddy Procurement Centre (a PACS), then the farmer sells at MSP. Without the token there is no entry into government procurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is copra priced at Berhampur mandi?
Copra is bought by oil millers and coconut traders on moisture, mould and oil content, not on weight alone. Dry, pale, mould-free kernel clears best; damp copra is cut or rejected.
How do I sell paddy at MSP in Ganjam?
In Ganjam the PACS is the entry point: get the land record verified on Bhulekh, take the P-PAS token, and deliver at the centre the token names. Berhampur's coconut trade is a separate business with no procurement route, so the token covers paddy only.
What commission is charged at Berhampur market?
Commission on regulated commodities is capped at about 1% under Odisha rules, with labour and weighing separate. If a deduction is higher, ask which head it belongs to and raise it with the market committee.
Is Berhampur regulated market on eNAM?
Yes, it is linked to the eNAM portal, which adds online bidding alongside the physical auction. Check it for the reference rate before you commit a large lot.
What documents do I need to sell coconut or copra?
Aadhaar or voter ID and your bank details are the basics; a bill from the buyer showing weight, moisture reading and deductions protects you if payment is short. For paddy, add the land record and P-PAS token.
When is the best time to sell copra in Berhampur?
Copra arrivals peak in the dry months and prices soften when the mills are stocked. If you can store dry copra safely, selling outside the peak often pays better than selling straight from the drying floor.
