Khammam Market Yard — Chilli, Cotton & Maize Selling Guide (Telangana)

Khammam's yard trades chilli, cotton and maize, and the chilli is the crop that decides a farmer's year. Two deductions do most of the damage here: moisture on the chilli and trash on the cotton — both are decided at the yard, and both can be reduced at the farm.

The yard runs under Telangana's agricultural marketing department with licensed commission agents. Chilli and maize are open-market sales priced on colour and moisture, cotton goes to ginners with CCI running MSP procurement separately, and paddy from the district moves through the token-based procurement system.

Chilli and cotton from the kharif harvest, maize alongside, and paddy in its season. Chilli is judged on colour, pod size and moisture; cotton on staple, moisture and trash; maize on moisture and foreign matter. Colour is the chilli premium, so drying and sorting are the difference between two prices on the same field.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Bank passbook in the seller's own name
  • Yard weighment slip
  • Commission agent's bill showing each deduction

Important warnings

  • • Chilli has no MSP, and colour plus moisture decide the price — a faded or damp lot is discounted heavily.
  • • Cotton weight is cut at the ginnery for moisture and trash after the yard sale, and the deduction is hard to reverse.
  • • Maize above the permitted moisture is cut at the weighbridge, and the reading is taken once.
  • • Commission and hamali are deducted from your bill; ask for each head separately.
  • • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~0.5–1%; commission ~2–4% — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Khammam Market Yard

  1. 1

Dry the chilli properly and sort by colour before bagging.

  2. 2

Keep the cotton clean and dry; ask for the moisture and trash reading at the weighbridge.

  3. 3

Dry the maize to the permitted moisture and clean out the dust.

  4. 4

Enter the lot, get it weighed, and note the reading.

  5. 5

Attend the auction and take the bill with each deduction as a separate line.

  6. 6

Keep the bill and slip until the payment is credited.

Say 25 quintals of chilli at ₹13,500 a quintal — ₹3,37,500 gross. Commission at about 2.5% is ₹8,438, hamali about ₹1,000, transport ₹1,800, leaving roughly ₹3,26,262, or ₹13,050 a quintal. A cotton lot on the same trip would be priced separately, and its ginnery cut for trash could take more than the commission does.

Local tips

In Khammam, chilli colour and cotton trash decide the bill. Dry and sort the chilli, keep the cotton sample clean, and ask for the moisture and trash readings in writing before the lot is tipped. Keep the weighbridge slip for every lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is chilli graded at Khammam?
Khammam's chilli is graded on colour, pod size and moisture, and the district's crop is often sold with the stem on, which the buyer discounts. Drying on clean sheets and removing damaged pods at the farm is what moves a lot into the higher grade.
Why is cotton trash a problem in Khammam?
Ginneries cut weight for trash and moisture after the yard sale. Leaf, dirt and damp kapas all reduce the payable weight, so clean picking and dry storage are the only protection.
Is there an MSP for chilli or maize?
Maize is on the MSP list but procurement depends on notified centres; chilli is not on the MSP list at all. In the yard, the auction price decides both.
What commission is charged at Khammam market yard?
Khammam's chilli and cotton are both commercial crops with their own commission, and neither is charged at the paddy rate. Chilli is graded on colour and moisture before the rate is applied, so the commission question comes after the grading question.
Does Khammam yard also handle paddy?
Paddy from the district moves through the token-based procurement system at notified purchase centres rather than the open auction. Get the token and centre allotment first if you are selling paddy.
Is Khammam market yard on eNAM?
Khammam is on eNAM, and for chilli the portal's arrival count is worth reading in the peak weeks because it shows how much of the district's crop is still to come. The rate itself is set on the floor.
