Nizamabad Turmeric Market — Grading, Storage & Selling Guide (Telangana)
Nizamabad is one of India's major turmeric markets, and the price set here is watched by growers far beyond the district. Turmeric is a stored crop, so the sale is rarely about the day you harvest — it is about how well you dried and graded the fingers, and when you choose to sell into an arrivals-driven market.

MSP CalculatorThe yard runs under Telangana's agricultural marketing department with licensed commission agents. Turmeric is graded on finger size, colour, cleanliness and moisture, and buyers include spice traders, processors and exporters. Maize and paddy move through the same district's markets, but turmeric is the crop that gives Nizamabad its name.
The Armoor belt around Nizamabad grows the district's turmeric, lifted in winter and boiled and dried on the farm before it is sold. Curcumin decides the grade, and the yard sells finger and bulb as separate lots. Maize and paddy keep their own seasons alongside it. Turmeric is outside MSP, so what the export buyers offer is the price.

- Commission agent's bill showing each deduction
Important warnings
- • Turmeric has no MSP. A glut year can push the price below the cost of curing, and holding stock in the hope of a recovery has burnt many growers.
- • Moisture is the enemy in storage — damp turmeric loses colour, develops mould and is discounted at the gate.
- • Mixing finger sizes or varieties in one lot prices the whole lot at the weakest grade.
- • Commission and hamali are deducted from your bill; ask for each head separately.
- • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~0.5–1%; commission ~2–4% — verify the notified rate.
How to sell your crop at Nizamabad Turmeric Market
- 1
Boil, dry and polish the turmeric properly — curing decides colour, and colour decides the price.
- 2
Grade fingers by size and separate the bulbs; a mixed lot is priced at its weakest grade.
- 3
Test the moisture before bagging; damp turmeric loses colour and invites mould in storage.
- 4
Store in a dry godown off the floor if you are holding for a better price.
- 5
Enter the lot, get it weighed, and attend the auction.
- 6
Take the bill with commission and hamali separate, and keep it until payment clears.
Say 40 quintals of turmeric fingers at ₹9,000 a quintal — ₹3,60,000 gross. Commission at about 2.5% is ₹9,000, hamali and weighing about ₹1,500, transport ₹2,500, leaving roughly ₹3,47,000, or ₹8,675 a quintal. A lot with poor colour or high moisture would be discounted well below that, which is why curing and grading matter more than waiting for the peak.
Local tips
In Nizamabad the crop is judged on colour before anything else. Cure and polish properly, grade fingers by size, and store dry. Watch the arrival trend — a heavy week is the worst time to sell, but holding through a falling market is how growers lose the curing cost twice.
