Information last verified: 2026-11-01 · Always verify on the official portal before applying.
Scholarship rules, amounts and deadlines change every year — always confirm on the official portal (NSP / state portal) before applying. Money comes only via DBT to your Aadhaar-seeded bank account — never pay any agent.
How central scholarships work
Central scholarships are the backbone for every state. Almost all of them run on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), where you first create a One Time Registration (OTR) number linked to Aadhaar, then apply to one scheme per year. Your institute verifies the form, then the district or state nodal officer, and the money comes by DBT to an Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
Key central schemes
Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship (CSSS)
Who: Top 20 percentile in Class 12 of your board, family income up to ₹4.5 lakh, regular college course
Benefit: ₹12,000 a year for the first three years of graduation, ₹20,000 a year at PG level
NMMS (National Means-cum-Merit)
Who: Class 8 students of government / aided schools who clear the state NMMS exam, income up to ₹3.5 lakh
Benefit: ₹12,000 a year from Class 9 to 12
PM YASASVI (OBC, EBC, DNT)
Who: OBC / EBC / DNT students, income up to ₹2.5 lakh
Benefit: Pre-matric and post-matric support, plus top-class school and college scholarships
Application calendar
- June – July: NSP opens for fresh and renewal applications; complete OTR early
- October – November: Usual last date for students, followed by institute verification
- January – June: Payments by DBT after district / state verification
Avoid these rejections
- Your name must match exactly on Aadhaar, the marksheet and the bank account — a single letter mismatch is the top rejection reason.
- Apply for only one scholarship per year on NSP; duplicate applications are rejected for all schemes.
- Renewal is not automatic — you must submit a renewal form every year with the previous year's result.
All India (Central) scholarship FAQs
What is the NSP One Time Registration (OTR)?
OTR is a unique 14-digit number you create once on NSP using Aadhaar (or the Aadhaar enrolment ID) and face authentication. It stays the same for all your future applications, so you do not register again every year.
How do I check if my scholarship money is paid?
Log in to NSP and open the application status, then check the PFMS 'Know Your Payments' page with your bank account number. If it shows 'Aadhaar not seeded', ask your bank to link Aadhaar to your account for DBT.
My NSP form shows 'defective'. What should I do?
A defective status means the institute or nodal officer found a problem — usually a wrong document, blurred upload or wrong fee entry. Correct it within the window shown on the portal, otherwise the form is rejected.
Can I get both a central and a state scholarship?
Usually not for the same purpose. Most post-matric schemes do not allow two scholarships at once, but a merit award or a one-time state incentive can sometimes be combined — read each scheme's rules.
Is income certificate needed for every NSP scheme?
Yes for all means-based schemes. It must be issued by the competent authority in your state, in the name of a parent or guardian, and be valid for the current year.
