How to use this calculator

  1. Enter car price minus down payment, rate and tenure — or type directly in any box.
  2. We show both schemes side by side: EMI in advance vs EMI in arrears.
  3. Pick the scheme with lower total cost that you can afford upfront.

What is this tool?

A car loan pays the dealer while you repay the bank monthly. This calculator compares the two EMI schemes — advance (first EMI upfront, slightly cheaper overall) and arrears (standard monthly). Use it before booking any new or used car on loan.

What dealers don't tell you (car loans)

Advance EMI is genuinely a little cheaper overall — the first payment instantly cuts principal. But it demands cash on day zero; if that strains you, arrears with a shorter tenure can beat it.

Used-car dealers often quote flat rates ('9% flat!') equal to roughly 16–17% reducing. Always convert to APR before signing.

Floating-rate car loans carry zero prepayment charges since January 2026. Fixed-rate dealer finance may lock you in — read the KFS.

Common car-loan questions

Advance or arrears — which is better?

Advance costs slightly less total interest but needs the first EMI upfront. If cash is tight, take arrears and prepay later — floating loans have no penalty since January 2026.

What down payment is ideal?

20% or more keeps EMI and total interest sane. Zero-down offers hide the cost in a higher rate and longer tenure.

New vs used car loan rate?

Used-car loans run 2–5 points higher and often use flat-rate quotes. Convert to APR and compare with a new-car reducing-rate offer.

Worked example: ₹8 lakh car loan at 9% for 5 years

  1. EMI in arrears (first EMI after one month) = ₹16,607; total interest ≈ ₹1,96,400.
  2. In advance EMI, the first EMI is paid upfront, so you effectively borrow ₹7,83,393 — the dealer may quote a lower 'rate', but compare the total payable.
  3. A 20% down payment instead of 10% on a ₹9 lakh on-road price cuts the loan by ₹90,000 and saves about ₹22,000 in interest.

How the Car loan calculator works: the rules

  • Car loans are secured by the car, which is hypothecated to the lender until the loan is closed.
  • After closing the loan, get the bank's NOC and remove the hypothecation from the RC at the RTO (or via Parivahan).
  • Dealer-arranged loans can bundle insurance and accessories into the loan — ask for a separate breakup.

Car loan calculator: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between advance and arrears EMI?

In arrears EMI, you pay the first EMI a month after disbursement. In advance EMI, you pay the first EMI upfront, which reduces the effective loan amount.

What is the maximum car loan tenure?

Usually up to 7 years for new cars, but longer tenures mean more interest and the car loses value faster than the loan reduces.

How much down payment should I make?

At least 10–20% of the on-road price. A higher down payment means lower EMI and less interest.

How do I remove hypothecation after closing the loan?

Get the NOC and Form 35 from the bank, then apply at the RTO or on the Parivahan portal to update the RC.

Is a used car loan costlier?

Yes, rates are usually higher and tenures shorter for used cars.

Can I prepay a car loan?

Yes, but many lenders charge foreclosure fees on fixed-rate car loans — check the sanction letter.
