PAN Card Status Check — 3 Easy Ways (2026)

Updated 2026-10-29• 4 min read

Track your PAN card application in under a minute. Use the 15-digit acknowledgement number on NSDL or UTIITSL — instant status without login.

You applied for a PAN card and now you're wondering "when will it come?". Here are three fast ways to check without paying anyone.

Way 1: NSDL (most common)

1. Open tin.tin.nsdl.com/pantan/StatusTrack.html

2. Choose *Application Type: PAN — New/Change Request*

3. Type your 15-digit acknowledgement number (from the receipt you got when you applied)

4. Click Submit

Statuses you'll see:

  • *Application received* — NSDL got your form
  • *Documents received* — your physical documents reached them
  • *PAN allotted* — the number is generated
  • *Dispatched* — the card is on its way by Speed Post; you'll get a tracking number

Way 2: UTIITSL (if you applied there)

If you applied through UTIITSL (some agents use them), use trackpan.utiitsl.com and enter your 10-digit coupon number instead.

Way 3: If you don't have the acknowledgement number

Try the SMS route:

  • Send *NSDLPAN <space> 15-digit-acknowledgement-number* to 57575
  • You'll get an SMS back with the status

Or call the NSDL helpline: 020-27218080 (they answer between 7 AM and 11 PM, all days).

How long does PAN take really?

  • Normal: 7 to 15 working days
  • Aadhaar e-KYC applications: 3-5 working days (fastest)
  • After minor NRE/NRI corrections: up to 20 days

If it's been more than 21 days and status still shows "Documents received", raise a complaint on the same NSDL page — you'll get a callback in 48 hours.

What to do with a PAN once you have it

Save 4 things:

1. Digital copy in Digilocker

2. Photocopy in your Aadhaar folder at home

3. Photo saved in your Google Drive for emergencies

4. Never share the front side with strangers on WhatsApp — fraudsters open loan accounts on it

Remember: Sahayak never asks for your PAN number. If any website does, be careful.

Status check for Instant e-PAN

If you got your PAN through the free Instant e-PAN service on the Income Tax e-filing portal (using Aadhaar OTP), the NSDL and UTIITSL trackers won't show it. Instead:

1. Go to incometax.gov.in and choose Instant e-PAN on the home page.

2. Click Check Status / Download PAN.

3. Enter your Aadhaar number and the OTP.

The PDF e-PAN appears once it's allotted — usually within minutes, sometimes a few hours. It's emailed to the address linked with your Aadhaar too.

PAN 2.0: what changes for you

The government approved the PAN 2.0 project in late 2024 to move all PAN services onto one platform with QR-enabled cards. Your existing PAN stays valid — you don't need to apply again. Under PAN 2.0, e-PAN is free and emailed, and a physical reprint is available for a small fee. If a site asks you to "upgrade to PAN 2.0" for money, it's a scam.

What each status message means

  • Application under process — your documents are being checked. Wait 5–7 working days.
  • PAN allotted / Dispatched — your PAN number exists; the card is being printed or posted. You can already use the number and download e-PAN.
  • Delivered — India Post has delivered the card. If you didn't receive it, use the consignment number on the India Post tracker.
  • Returned undelivered — the address was incomplete. Apply for a reprint with the correct address.
  • Document discrepancy — there's a problem with your proof or photo. Reply to the email or letter with corrected documents.

Check if your PAN is linked to Aadhaar

A PAN that isn't linked to Aadhaar becomes inoperative. You can't file returns, and banks deduct TDS at a higher rate. Check on incometax.gov.in → Link Aadhaar Status using your PAN and Aadhaar numbers. If it isn't linked, the portal lets you link it after paying the late fee of ₹1,000 through e-Pay Tax.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check PAN status by name and date of birth?

Yes, on the e-filing portal's Know Your PAN service, using your name, date of birth and mobile number with an OTP.

How long is e-PAN valid?

An e-PAN is a valid proof of PAN for life, just like the physical card.

Can I have two PAN cards?

No. Holding more than one PAN is not allowed and can lead to a penalty of ₹10,000. Surrender the extra one through the PAN correction form.

My PAN status says "invalid" — what should I do?

Check that you entered the number correctly. If it's right, the PAN may be deactivated or a duplicate; contact your Assessing Officer or the NSDL / UTIITSL helpdesk.

PAN for minors, NRIs and lost cards

  • Minors can get a PAN through Form 49A with a parent or guardian as the representative assessee. The card has no photo or signature; once the child turns 18, apply for a correction to add them.
  • NRIs and foreign citizens apply with Form 49A (Indian citizens abroad) or Form 49AA (foreign citizens), using an overseas address and passport as proof.
  • Lost or damaged PAN: you don't need a new PAN. Apply for a reprint on the NSDL (Protean) or UTIITSL site, or download your e-PAN free if your mobile and email are linked.

Never apply for a second PAN after losing your card. A duplicate PAN can attract a penalty, and the old one still exists in the tax records.
