Chittoor Market — Mango, Tomato & Groundnut Selling Guide (Andhra Pradesh)

Chittoor's market is a perishables market first: tomato from the Madanapalle belt and mango in the summer, with groundnut alongside. None of the three has a procurement price to fall back on, so the page that matters here is about grading, timing and the crash years.

The yard runs under Andhra Pradesh's market committee system with licensed commission agents. Tomato and mango are open-market sales priced on freshness, size and variety, and tomato is the crop most exposed to a glut — when arrivals peak, the rate can fall below the cost of picking. Groundnut has an MSP route only at notified centres.

Tomato through much of the year with a peak in the winter and a crash risk when the whole belt harvests together; mango in the summer; groundnut in its season. Tomato is judged on size, colour and firmness, mango on variety, size and ripeness, groundnut on moisture and kernel quality.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Bank passbook in the seller's own name
  • Yard weighment slip
  • Commission agent's bill showing each deduction

Important warnings

  • • Tomato and mango have no MSP. In a glut the tomato rate can fall below the cost of picking and transport, and no agency steps in.
  • • A mixed or over-ripe crate is discounted heavily; packing decides more of the price than the negotiation.
  • • Mango is often quoted per box — fix the unit before the truck is unloaded, because per-box and per-quintal quotes are not comparable.
  • • Groundnut MSP is available only at notified centres, so check before relying on it.
  • • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~1%; commission ~2–4% — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Chittoor Market

  1. 1

Grade tomato by size and colour at the farm, and pack in crates that protect the fruit.

  2. 2

Reach the yard early — the buyers who resupply the city set the price in the first hours.

  3. 3

For mango, pick at the right maturity for the journey and pack in single layers.

  4. 4

Weigh and take the slip; for mango, confirm whether the rate is per box or per quintal.

  5. 5

Attend the auction and note the rate against your lot.

  6. 6

Keep the bill and slip until the payment is credited.

Say 20 quintals of tomato at ₹800 a quintal — ₹16,000 gross. Commission at about 2.5% is ₹400, hamali and crates about ₹500, transport ₹900, leaving roughly ₹14,200, or ₹710 a quintal. In a crash week the same load at ₹400 a quintal barely covers the transport — which is why staggered planting and grading matter more here than in any grain crop.

Local tips

Chittoor rewards timing over volume. Stagger the tomato planting so the whole crop does not land in the same glut week, grade by size, and sell the best crates first. For mango, fix the unit — box or quintal — and pack for the journey; bruised fruit is a discount at the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do tomato prices crash in Chittoor?
Tomato has no MSP, and when the Madanapalle belt and neighbouring areas harvest together, arrivals outrun demand and the rate can fall below the cost of picking. Staggered planting and early grading are the usual defences.
How is mango sold at Chittoor market?
On variety, size and ripeness, and often per box rather than per quintal. Fix the unit before unloading, and pack in single layers so the fruit survives the journey.
Is there an MSP for tomato or mango?
No. Tomato and mango sit outside the MSP list, and Chittoor's tomato is knocked down by the crate on the morning's arrivals, so the price is whatever the buyers at the gate will pay. Groundnut, the third line in this yard, is the only crop here with a procurement option at all.
What commission is charged at Chittoor market?
Chittoor sells mango, tomato and groundnut, and the perishables carry a higher commission than the groundnut. Tomato in particular is charged as a perishable and sold by the crate, not the quintal. Confirm both the rate and the unit before unloading.
Can I sell groundnut at MSP in Chittoor?
Groundnut does have an MSP, but Chittoor's buying happens only at notified centres and only in a year when the state announces a procurement scheme — otherwise the crop goes to the oil millers at the open rate. Confirm with the district agriculture office that a centre is actually open before you plan a load around MSP.
Is Chittoor market listed on eNAM?
Chittoor is on the eNAM portal, but the two lines that fill this yard — tomato and mango — are auctioned on the floor, and a perishable lot will not wait for an online bid to close. The portal is worth checking for the groundnut rate; for tomato, the crate price on the morning is the only number that decides anything.
