How chilli, paddy and mango move through Andhra Pradesh market yards
Andhra Pradesh regulates trade through roughly 160 market yards under the AP (Agricultural Produce and Livestock) Markets Act. Guntur is Asia's largest chilli yard, and Vijayawada, Kurnool, Rajahmundry, Nellore and Chittoor handle the rest of the paddy, cotton, maize and mango flow. Auctions are migrating to the state e-APMC/ReMS terminals, so the accepted bid is printed rather than shouted.
Gate entry to bank credit — Andhra Pradesh process
Step 1: Bring the crop to the market yard with Aadhaar, land records (pahani) and bank passbook. Step 2: Enter through the gate and get the lot registered — the gate slip fixes your arrival weight. Step 3: A licensed commission agent handles the lot; ask for the agent code printed on the slip. Step 4: Weighing and grading follow, then the auction on the e-APMC terminal. Step 5: Payment is released through the agent to your bank account; keep the gate slip and weighment slip until the credit shows.
Guntur, Vijayawada & Kurnool — local selling tips
Guntur chilli is graded on colour, moisture and stalk content — a lot with stalk above 4% loses money even if the colour is good. Vijayawada's yard is busiest on the days after a festival, when retail restocking spikes. Mango from Chittoor and Krishna districts sells best before the Tamil Nadu crop lands, usually by the first week of May.
Guntur chilli — moisture, colour and the 'kandulu' grade
Guntur lots are quoted by variety first (Teja, 341, Byadgi-type) and then cut on moisture. A 1% moisture excess can knock ₹300–500 off a quintal, and traders apply a 'kandulu' (seed) percentage cut that farmers often dispute. Dry the chilli to 8–9% moisture and ask for the moisture meter reading in writing before the auction closes.

MSP CalculatorThree ways to be involved with a mandi
Tier 1 — Sell your own crop
Free · no licence needed
Any farmer with pahani land records can sell own produce in an AP market yard without a trader licence. Sale must run through a licensed commission agent, and the gate slip plus weighment slip are your proof of quantity.
Tier 2 — Trade as licensed trader/agent
Licence required · fee varies
Trader / commission agent licence under the AP (Agricultural Produce & Livestock) Markets Act.
Tier 3 — Own a private mandi
Serious capital · for FPOs/investors
Private market licence under the AP Markets Act; fee + bank guarantee; 5 km rule applies.

How selling actually works in Andhra Pradesh
For MSP paddy/groundnut, register at the notified procurement centre with land records and bank account for DBT.

What they don't tell you — know your rights
- • Chilli (Guntur) price volatility and moisture-cut disputes.
- • Groundnut MSP procurement limited to notified centres.
- • Cropyield loss from cyclones disrupts supply and prices.
- • Protect yourself: always take and keep the official weighment slip (parchi) and the auction bill for every sale — it is your proof in any dispute. Anything charged beyond the legal commission rate can be reported to the Market Committee.
