Guntur Chilli Market — How Red Chilli, Cotton & Turmeric Are Sold (Andhra Pradesh)

Guntur's mirchi yard is the largest red chilli market in Asia, and it sets the reference price for chilli across India. Arrivals come from the Guntur, Prakasam and Khammam belts, and the sale is decided by colour, moisture and export demand rather than by any government rate. Cotton and turmeric share the yard.

The yard runs under Andhra Pradesh's agricultural market committee system, with licensed commission agents handling the sale and the paperwork. Chilli is graded on colour, pod length, stem content and moisture, and the buyer's moisture reading is where most disputes start. There is no MSP for chilli, so the day's export demand and arrivals are the price. Cold storage around Guntur lets a grower hold stock, but it costs rent and some weight.

Red chilli is the main crop, arriving after the kharif and rabi harvests and continuing for months from cold stores. Cotton from the same belt and turmeric in smaller volumes move through the yard. Chilli is judged on colour, moisture, stem and damaged pods; cotton on staple, moisture and trash; turmeric on colour, curcumin and moisture.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the chilli plot
  • Bank passbook in the seller's own name
  • Yard weighment slip
  • Commission agent's bill showing each deduction

Important warnings

  • • Chilli has no MSP. The price is set by export demand and arrivals, and it can swing hard within a season — a lot held for a better rate can lose more to moisture and rent than it gains.
  • • Moisture cuts are the most disputed deduction in Guntur: ask for the reading, watch the meter, and dry the lot before it is weighed.
  • • Cold storage costs rent and some weight loss. Work out the break-even before storing, not after.
  • • A mixed lot with stems and damaged pods is priced at its worst grade, so sorting at the farm pays twice.
  • • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~1%; commission ~2–4% — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Guntur Chilli Market

  1. 1

Dry the chilli properly before bagging — moisture is the first cut, and it is applied on weight at the buyer's meter.

  2. 2

Grade by colour and pod length, and remove stems and damaged pods; a mixed lot is priced at its worst chilli.

  3. 3

Bag in uniform lots and record the bag count and weight before loading.

  4. 4

Enter the lot at the yard, get it weighed, and stay for the moisture reading.

  5. 5

Attend the auction and note the rate against your lot number.

  6. 6

Collect the bill with commission, hamali and weighing as separate lines, and keep it until payment clears.

Say 30 quintals of red chilli at ₹14,000 a quintal — ₹4,20,000 gross. Commission at about 2.5% is ₹10,500, hamali and weighing about ₹1,500, transport ₹2,000, leaving roughly ₹4,06,000, or ₹13,533 a quintal. A 3% moisture cut would take another ₹12,600 — nearly as much as the commission — which is why drying is the most profitable work on a chilli farm.

Local tips

In Guntur the sample is everything: colour, pod length and dryness decide the price before anyone discusses numbers. Dry the chilli to the buyer's spec, sort out stems and damaged pods, and keep one sample per lot. If you store, check the cold store's rent and shrinkage terms in writing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my chilli price cut for moisture at Guntur?
Chilli is bought on dry weight, and the buyer's meter decides the moisture. A lot above the agreed limit is cut on weight at the yard. Dry the chilli properly before bagging, ask for the reading, and do not mix a damp lot with a dry one.
Is there an MSP for chilli in Andhra Pradesh?
No. Chilli is not on the MSP list, so the Guntur auction price and export demand decide what you get. That is why grading and drying matter more here than in a paddy or groundnut sale.
Should I store chilli in a cold store?
Only if the expected price rise beats the rent plus weight loss. Cold storage around Guntur is widely used, but it is a cost, not a guarantee. Get the rent and shrinkage terms in writing before the bags go in.
What commission is charged at Guntur mirchi yard?
Guntur's mirchi yard charges commission on the chilli trade's own rate, and because chilli moves in bags the yard also levies a weighing and bagging charge. Ask for the chilli rate and the per-bag charge together — quoting the foodgrain rate at this yard would simply be wrong.
Does Guntur market trade anything besides chilli?
Yes — cotton from the same belt and turmeric in smaller volumes move through the yard, each with its own buyer pool and grading. Do not price a cotton or turmeric lot on the chilli rate.
Is Guntur chilli market on eNAM?
Guntur is on eNAM, and for chilli that means more than at most yards: the online bids run alongside the physical lots, so an eNAM bid is a real alternative rather than a formality. Compare it with the floor price before releasing a big lot.
