Ratlam Mandi — Garlic, Onion & Soybean Selling Guide (MP)

Ratlam's mandi is the garlic yard of western Madhya Pradesh, and garlic is a crop where grade decides almost everything: bulb size, skin colour, moisture and freedom from rot move the price far more than the headline rate does. Onion and soybean share the same yard in their seasons.

The mandi committee runs the gate, electronic weighbridge and auction with licensed commission agents. Garlic and onion are open-market crops with no MSP, so the buyer's grade sheet is the price. Soybean is an open-market crop too, with the state's e-Uparjan portal used for wheat procurement in its season.

Garlic and onion in their seasons, soybean from the kharif harvest. Garlic is graded on bulb size, skin colour, moisture and rot; onion on size and skin; soybean on moisture and foreign matter. Garlic stores reasonably well if it is cured and kept dry, which is why it is one of the few crops here worth holding.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Bank passbook in the seller's own name
  • Mandi weighment slip
  • Commission agent's bill with each deduction

Important warnings

  • • Garlic and onion have no MSP, and grade is the only price signal — a mixed lot is priced at its worst bulbs.
  • • Damp garlic rots in the bag and in storage; drying and curing are worth more than a better rate.
  • • Unofficial labour and weighing charges are a common complaint; ask for each on the bill.
  • • Soybean moisture is cut at the weighbridge, and the reading is taken once.
  • • Legal commission rate: Mandi fee ~1% plus commission around 1–2% — verify the notified rate at the Mandi Samiti.

How to sell your crop at Ratlam Mandi

  1. 1

Cure and dry garlic properly before bagging; damp bulbs rot in the bag and in storage.

  2. 2

Grade by bulb size and remove damaged or sprouting bulbs before the lot is weighed.

  3. 3

Enter the lot at the gate and watch the electronic weighment.

  4. 4

Attend the auction and note the rate against your lot number.

  5. 5

Take the bill with mandi fee, commission and hamali as separate lines.

  6. 6

If storing, keep the bags off the floor in a dry room and check for rot monthly.

Say 50 quintals of garlic at ₹8,000 a quintal — ₹4,00,000 gross. Mandi fee at about 1% is ₹4,000, commission at about 1.5% is ₹6,000, hamali about ₹1,000, leaving roughly ₹3,89,000, or ₹7,780 a quintal. A lot with split or sprouting bulbs would be graded down heavily, so the sorting done at the farm is the biggest single lever here.

Local tips

Garlic rewards curing and grading more than any other crop in the district. Cure it in the shade, cut the stems, remove damaged bulbs, and store it dry if you plan to hold. Check the e-Mandi rate for Ratlam before loading, and never mix a wet lot with a dry one.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is garlic graded at Ratlam mandi?
Ratlam's garlic is graded on bulb size, skin colour and how well it has dried, with sprouting and rot rejected outright. The Malwa crop is sold in bags by grade, and a bag that mixes sizes is knocked down to the smallest bulb in it.
Is garlic bought at MSP?
No. Garlic has no MSP, so the auction rate and the buyer's grade sheet are the price. There is no procurement agency to fall back on.
Can I store garlic and sell later?
Yes, if it is properly cured and kept dry. Garlic stores better than onion, but rot can still spread in a damp room, so check the bags regularly and keep them off the floor.
What is the mandi fee at Ratlam?
Ratlam's charges follow the MP schedule, but this yard's garlic and onion lines add a bagging and sorting charge that a grain lot never sees. Ask for the sorting charge before unloading — it is applied when the buyer re-grades a mixed lot.
Is Ratlam mandi listed on eNAM?
Ratlam is on eNAM and in the e-Mandi daily rate, and for garlic that matters because the Malwa crop's price swings on arrival volume. Watch the portal's arrival count for the week before deciding to hold or sell.
What other crops come to Ratlam mandi?
Onion and soybean share the yard with garlic in their seasons. Soybean is judged on moisture and foreign matter, onion on size and skin, and each has its own buyer pool.
