Khargone Mandi — Cotton, Chilli & Soybean in the Nimar Belt (MP)

Khargone is a Nimar-belt yard, and its book is different from the Malwa mandis: cotton, chilli and soybean, each with its own buyer and its own grading language. Cotton goes to ginners, chilli to spice traders and processors, and soybean to the open market, so a single trip to the yard can involve three very different negotiations.

The mandi committee runs the gate, electronic weighbridge and auction with licensed commission agents. Cotton is priced on staple length, moisture and trash, with the Cotton Corporation of India running MSP procurement at notified centres. Chilli is graded on colour, size and moisture, and it is one of the few crops here where appearance carries a real premium.

Cotton from the kharif harvest, chilli in the same season, and soybean alongside. Cotton is judged on staple and trash, chilli on colour, size and moisture, soybean on moisture and foreign matter. Chilli needs drying and careful storage — a damp lot loses colour and value quickly.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Bank passbook in the seller's own name
  • CCI registration slip for cotton MSP
  • Mandi weighment slip and the buyer's bill

Important warnings

  • • Cotton weight is cut at the ginnery for moisture and trash after the mandi sale, and the deduction is hard to reverse once the lot has moved.
  • • Chilli loses colour and value if it is not dried properly; a damp lot is discounted heavily.
  • • CCI MSP cotton is a separate registration and queue, not the open auction.
  • • Unofficial labour and weighing charges are a common complaint; ask for each on the bill.
  • • Legal commission rate: Mandi fee ~1% plus commission around 1–2% — verify the notified rate at the Mandi Samiti.

How to sell your crop at Khargone Mandi

  1. 1

For cotton, pick dry and keep the kapas clean; grade by staple and keep varieties separate.

  2. 2

For chilli, dry the pods properly and grade by colour and size before bagging.

  3. 3

Enter the lot at the gate and watch the electronic weighment.

  4. 4

Ask for moisture and trash readings in writing before the lot is tipped.

  5. 5

Attend the auction and note the rate against your lot number.

  6. 6

Keep the bill and slip until payment is credited; for CCI cotton, keep the registration slip too.

Say 40 quintals of chilli at ₹12,000 a quintal — ₹4,80,000 gross. Mandi fee at about 1% is ₹4,800, commission at about 1.5% is ₹7,200, hamali about ₹1,200, leaving roughly ₹4,66,800, or ₹11,670 a quintal. A lot with faded colour or high moisture would be graded down heavily, so drying and sorting at the farm decide most of the outcome.

Local tips

In Nimar, chilli is a drying and sorting crop before it is a selling crop. Dry the pods properly, sort out the discoloured ones, and store the bags off the floor. For cotton, keep the kapas clean and dry, and ask for the moisture and trash reading at the weighbridge before the lot leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is chilli graded at Khargone mandi?
Khargone's chilli is a Nimar-belt crop, graded on colour, pod size and moisture, and the district's lots usually come in drier than the coastal crop because of the climate. Sort out the stems and the shrivelled pods at the farm — a bag with stems in it is priced as a lower grade.
How do I sell cotton at MSP in Khargone?
Khargone's cotton reaches CCI only through a notified centre with its own registration and token, and the district's ginners bid at the yard separately. Register on the CCI portal if the open rate is near MSP; otherwise the ginner's bid is the quicker sale.
Why does cotton lose weight at the ginnery after the Khargone sale?
In Khargone the loss shows up at ginning, where the seed is separated and the lint is weighed — so the deduction for moisture and trash is taken on a weight already lower than what you sold. Ask for the out-turn percentage as well as the deduction, or the two get confused.
What is the mandi fee in Khargone?
Khargone's bill carries the MP mandi fee, the agent's commission and the labour and weighing charges, and chilli adds a bagging charge that grain does not. Ask for the bagging line separately, because it is the one most often folded into the commission.
Is Khargone mandi listed on eNAM?
Khargone is on eNAM, and the portal's arrival figures are worth reading in the chilli season because they show whether the Nimar crop is coming in heavy. The rate itself still comes from the floor auction, so use the portal for context rather than as a sale channel.
Can I store chilli and sell later?
Yes, if it is properly dried and kept in a dry room. Chilli keeps colour better than most crops, but damp storage ruins it, so check the bags and keep them off the floor.
