Bardhaman Rice Market — Paddy Procurement & Potato Selling Guide

Bardhaman is the rice bowl of West Bengal, and its market runs on paddy. Rice mills are the private buyers, while MSP procurement runs through PACS and notified purchase centres with payment straight into the farmer's account. Since 2020 the whole government side of that has moved onto epaddy.wb.gov.in — registration, eKYC, slot booking and the payment trail all sit on one portal.

West Bengal procures paddy at MSP through PACS, co-operative societies and notified purchase centres, and pays by DBT. The Department of Food & Supplies runs the Online Paddy Procurement System at epaddy.wb.gov.in: a farmer registers, completes eKYC with an Aadhaar OTP using the registration number, voter ID or Krishak Bandhu ID, then books a delivery slot by self-scheduling and takes the load to the allotted centre. The private channel is the rice mills, which buy on moisture and recovery rather than on MSP. The yards themselves sit under WBSAMB's regulated system, with the market fee paid by traders through e-Permit.

Paddy through the aman and boro seasons — aman arrives after the monsoon harvest and boro in the summer — and potato through the winter. Paddy is judged on moisture, chaff and damaged grain; potato on size and skin. Aman is the season that carries the procurement calendar, which is why the registration date matters as much as the rate. Potato is the open-market crop, with no MSP behind it.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller, with the same name as the bank account
  • Land record for the plot the paddy came from
  • Bank passbook in the farmer's own name, linked to Aadhaar
  • Krishak Bandhu ID, or the registration number issued on the portal
  • Printout of the self-scheduled slot and the centre's weighment slip

Important warnings

  • • Paddy above the permitted moisture is cut at the weighbridge, and the reading is taken once — drying at the farm is cheaper than the cut.
  • • A slot booked late in the season can fall after the centre's allocation is used up, so register early rather than when the crop is ready.
  • • A rice mill's offer is not the MSP and comes with its own recovery and moisture deductions — compare the net figure and the payment date, not the headline rate.
  • • Potato has no MSP, and a heavy year can push it below the cost of production with no agency to step in.
  • • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~1%; commission ~2% for foodgrains — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Bardhaman Rice Market

  1. 1

Register as a farmer on epaddy.wb.gov.in before the season opens, using your Aadhaar, land record and bank details.

  2. 2

Complete the eKYC with the Aadhaar OTP — you can pull up the record by registration number, voter ID or Krishak Bandhu ID.

  3. 3

Use 'Locate Your Purchase Centre' to see which CPC, PACS or mobile centre serves your mouza, then self-schedule a delivery slot.

  4. 4

Dry and clean the paddy before the slot date; the moisture reading at the centre is taken once and cut against you.

  5. 5

Deliver on the slot date, watch the weighment, and keep the registration certificate and the centre's slip.

  6. 6

Check 'Farmer Bank Status' on the portal until the DBT payment lands, rather than chasing the centre by phone.

Take 100 quintals of aman paddy at ₹2,300 a quintal — ₹2,30,000 gross at the purchase centre. A 2% moisture cut is ₹4,600, hamali and transport about ₹3,500, leaving roughly ₹2,21,900, or ₹2,219 a quintal. A mill offering ₹2,250 with immediate settlement pays ₹2,25,000 before its own deductions. The mill can be the better deal — but only if its recovery cut is smaller than the ₹3,100 gap and the money actually arrives on the promised date.

Local tips

In Bardhaman the calendar decides the price. Register on epaddy before the season, finish the eKYC early, and book a slot rather than turning up and queueing — an unscheduled load at a busy centre can sit for days. Dry the paddy properly at the farm; every point of moisture is money. Keep the Krishak Bandhu ID handy, because it is one of the three ways the portal pulls up your record.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for paddy procurement in Bardhaman?
Register on epaddy.wb.gov.in, the Online Paddy Procurement System run by the Department of Food & Supplies. You need Aadhaar, the land record for the plot and bank details in your own name, then complete the eKYC with an Aadhaar OTP.
What is self-scheduling on the paddy portal?
It is the slot-booking step on epaddy.wb.gov.in. Instead of turning up at a purchase centre and queueing, you pick a date and centre, and the centre expects your load on that day. You can also cancel and re-book a slot from the same portal.
What is a Krishak Bandhu ID and do I need it?
It is the farmer identity issued under West Bengal's Krishak Bandhu income support scheme, which pays ₹10,000 per acre a year in two instalments with a minimum of ₹4,000. You do not have to use it, but the paddy portal accepts it along with the registration number or voter ID to pull up your record for eKYC.
What is the difference between a CPC, an mCPC and a PACS centre?
All three are paddy purchase points on the portal. A CPC is a centralised procurement centre, an mCPC is a mobile purchase centre that moves between locations, and PACS and co-operative societies run their own centres. 'Locate Your Purchase Centre' on epaddy shows which one covers your mouza.
Does a rice mill pay more than the MSP?
Sometimes, but compare the net and the date. A mill buys on recovery and moisture and makes its own deductions, while the MSP centre works to a notified rate with a moisture cut. A higher headline from a mill can net less once its recovery cut is applied.
When does paddy procurement open in West Bengal?
The aman window opens after the monsoon harvest — in recent seasons it has started around 1 November — and the exact dates and centre allocations are notified for each KMS. Check the activity calendar and circulars on epaddy.wb.gov.in for the current season rather than relying on last year's date.
