Malda Mango Market — Himsagar, Lakshmanbhog & Fazli Selling Guide
Malda is the mango district, and three of its varieties carry Geographical Indication tags — Laxman Bhog, Khirsapati (Himsagar) and Fazli. Mango shares the district with jute and paddy, and the three behave nothing alike: a perishable with a six-week window, a fibre crop whose MSP purchase is limited, and a grain with its own procurement calendar.

MSP CalculatorMango moves to traders and packers, and export lots are graded to a specification and handled through packhouses before they leave the district. Jute goes to the mills, and its open-market price often sits below the announced MSP because the state's MSP purchase is limited. Paddy follows the PACS and epaddy route. The district's yards sit under West Bengal's regulated system, with the market fee paid by traders through e-Permit, and the district also has Krishak Bazars for direct sale.
Mango from May to July, with Laxmanbhog and Himsagar early and Fazli later in the season; jute through the kharif months; paddy after the monsoon. Mango is graded on variety, size, colour and freedom from blemish, and the GI varieties are judged against a named standard rather than a generic one. Jute is graded on fibre length, colour and moisture. Mango's season is short and its shelf life shorter, so the picking date is a commercial decision, not a farm one.

Documents you need
- Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
- Land record for the mango orchard
- Bank passbook in the farmer's own name
- Weighment or crate-count slip from the trader or packhouse
- Packhouse grading record, for an export lot
Important warnings
- • Mango has a six-week window and no storage life once picked — a delayed lorry is a lost season's margin, not a late payment.
- • Jute's open-market price often sits below the announced MSP because MSP purchase is limited, so the announcement is not a floor you can rely on.
- • A mixed crate of varieties is priced at the lowest variety in it, which can wipe out the premium the GI tag is supposed to earn.
- • Picking immature fruit to survive the journey costs you the flavour the buyer is paying for, and the next season's order with it.
- • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~1%; commission ~2% for foodgrains — verify the notified rate.
How to sell your crop at Malda Mango Market
- 1
Pick to the market you are selling to — export and distant lots need fruit at a firmer maturity than a local sale.
- 2
Grade by variety first and size second; Himsagar, Laxmanbhog and Fazli are priced separately, never as one mango lot.
- 3
Pack in crates with padding, and count them; a crushed crate is a total loss, not a discount.
- 4
For the export route, talk to a packhouse before the season starts and grade to its written specification.
- 5
Get the rate, the grade and every deduction on a bill before the crates leave the yard.
- 6
Keep the bill and the transport receipt until the payment is credited.
Take 100 crates of Himsagar at ₹600 a crate — ₹60,000 gross. Commission at about 4% is ₹2,400, hamali and crates ₹1,800, transport ₹2,000, leaving roughly ₹53,800. Sold to a packhouse as a graded export lot the same fruit can clear materially more — but only if it was picked to that maturity and graded to that specification at the orchard, because nothing can be fixed at the yard.
Local tips
In Malda the season is decided before the fruit is picked. Talk to a packhouse in April, not in June, and grade to its written specification at the orchard. Keep the three varieties in separate crates — the GI tag earns a premium only when the buyer can see which variety he is getting. For jute, retting quality is where the discount is applied; for paddy, the epaddy registration is the first step, not the last.
