Ambala Mandi — Wheat, Paddy & Maize on the Punjab Border (Haryana)

Ambala's grain market serves the eastern edge of Haryana, where the cropping pattern looks more like Punjab's than the dry west: wheat and paddy dominate and maize appears in the kharif. The yard is an arhtiya market, and the state's procurement agencies lift the MSP stock from here.

Wheat and paddy move through licensed arhtiyas to HAFED, cooperative agencies and FCI, with DBT payment to the farmer's account. Maize is usually a private sale to traders and feed units. Because the district borders Punjab, many farmers here deal with arhtiyas on both sides of the line, and the quoted rate often reflects that cross-border competition.

Wheat in rabi, paddy and maize in kharif. Wheat is judged on moisture and grain quality, paddy on moisture and chaff, maize on moisture and foreign matter. The season pattern from the catalog — paddy October to November, wheat April to May — is the one to plan loading around.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller, matching the land record
  • Land record (fard) for the plot
  • Aadhaar-linked bank passbook
  • J-form and gate entry
  • Weighment and quality slips

Important warnings

  • • Moisture deductions are the most common dispute here; the reading is taken once, at the weighbridge.
  • • Maize sold privately has no MSP and no procurement queue, so agree the rate and deduction terms before unloading.
  • • Paddy with heavy chaff is cut or rejected, and in a wet harvest the whole queue slows down.
  • • If you owe the arhtiya, the sale proceeds can be adjusted against the dues — clarify the account before the season.
  • • Legal commission rate: Statutory up to 2.5%; Centre pays fixed ~Rs.50.75/qtl wheat, ~Rs.50.61/qtl paddy from RMS 2026-27 — verify current notification.

How to sell your crop at Ambala Grain Market

  1. 1

Choose the channel: MSP wheat or paddy through an arhtiya, or maize to a private trader.

  2. 2

Dry the grain to the prescribed moisture before loading — moisture is the first deduction.

  3. 3

Get the J-form and gate entry for MSP lots, and note the lot and trolley numbers.

  4. 4

Stay for the weighment and take the slip before the lot is tipped.

  5. 5

Attend sampling and read the quality report before signing anything.

  6. 6

Keep the J-form until the DBT credit appears in your account.

Say 60 quintals of paddy at ₹2,300 a quintal — ₹1,38,000 gross. A 2% moisture cut is ₹2,760, labour about ₹900, leaving roughly ₹1,34,340, or ₹2,239 a quintal. Maize sold privately on the same day at ₹2,100 a quintal would gross ₹1,26,000 with a much shorter wait — the comparison is the net figure and the payment date, not the headline rate.

Local tips

Ask the arhtiya which agency is lifting that week before you load, because the lifting schedule decides your payment date. Keep the J-form photograph on your phone and check the DBT credit against the weighment slip rather than against memory.

Haryana: registration & rules recap

Like Punjab, Haryana procures through arhtiyas with DBT to the farmer's bank account. Keep the J-Form (purchase) and weigh slip safe until payment clears.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is wheat procured at Ambala mandi?
The wheat window in Haryana runs through the rabi season, roughly April to May, with dates notified each year. Confirm the current window with your arhtiya or the marketing board before you plan the harvest for the mandi.
What is the commission at Ambala mandi?
In Ambala the arhtiya's commission on MSP grain is fixed by the state, and the Centre adds its own per-quintal commission, so the two should appear as separate entries on the cost sheet. Ambala handles paddy alongside wheat, and the labour charge differs between the two crops.
Can I sell maize at Ambala mandi?
Yes, but maize is normally a private trade to traders and feed units rather than an MSP procurement crop. Agree the rate and deduction terms before unloading, and take the weighment slip.
How long does paddy payment take at Ambala?
Ambala's payment follows lifting and the release of funds, and lands in the J-form account by DBT. In the paddy season a heavy arrival can push lifting back and stretch the wait to weeks, so keep the J-form and the slip until the money arrives.
Why is my paddy rejected at the gate?
Moisture above the limit or excessive chaff are the usual reasons. Ask for the reading, dry and clean the lot, and re-book rather than leaving it in the yard.
Is Ambala mandi listed on eNAM?
The yard is listed on the eNAM portal, but MSP wheat and paddy still move through arhtiyas at the gate. Use eNAM for the reference rate.
