Hisar Mandi — Cotton, Wheat & Mustard in Haryana's Dry Belt

Hisar sits in the drier western belt where cotton, mustard and wheat share the cropping calendar, and its mandi reflects that mix. Cotton is a private trade with ginners and the Cotton Corporation of India; wheat and mustard move through arhtiyas to the procurement agencies and to oil millers.

The yard follows Haryana's arhtiya model for grain, with HAFED, cooperative agencies and FCI lifting MSP stock and DBT payment to the farmer. Cotton is priced separately on staple length, moisture and trash, and CCI runs its own MSP procurement with a separate registration. The two trades do not share a rate, a buyer pool or a payment clock.

Cotton from the kharif harvest, mustard in rabi, and wheat in the rabi season. Mustard is bought by oil millers on moisture and oil content; cotton by ginners on staple and trash; wheat on moisture and grain quality. The district's dry weather helps drying but also makes late-sown crops vulnerable to heat.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Bank account details in the seller's name
  • CCI registration slip for cotton MSP
  • Yard weighment slip and the buyer's bill

Important warnings

  • • Cotton weight is cut at the ginnery for moisture and trash after the mandi sale, and the deduction is very hard to reverse once the lot has moved.
  • • Mixing varieties or staple lengths prices the whole heap at the weakest grade in it.
  • • CCI MSP cotton is a separate registration and queue — turning up at the open auction expecting the MSP rate wastes a day.
  • • Mustard with high moisture loses weight in storage and is discounted by oil millers on delivery.
  • • Legal commission rate: Statutory up to 2.5%; Centre pays fixed ~Rs.50.75/qtl wheat, ~Rs.50.61/qtl paddy from RMS 2026-27 — verify current notification.

How to sell your crop at Hisar Grain Market

  1. 1

For cotton, pick dry and keep the kapas clean — trash is the first discount a ginner applies.

  2. 2

Grade by staple and keep varieties separate; a mixed heap is priced at its worst grade.

  3. 3

For CCI procurement, register separately and confirm the day's centre and rate.

  4. 4

For wheat and mustard, take the J-form or the buyer's bill, and stay for the weighment.

  5. 5

Ask for moisture and trash readings in writing before the lot is tipped.

  6. 6

Keep the weighment slip and the bill until payment is credited, and compare the ginner's weight with the yard's.

Say 50 quintals of cotton at ₹7,000 a quintal — ₹3,50,000 gross. A 3% cut for moisture and trash is ₹10,500, labour about ₹2,000, leaving roughly ₹3,37,500, or ₹6,750 a quintal. Dry, clean kapas at a 1% cut would return about ₹3,44,500 — nearly ₹7,000 more on the same heap, for work done at picking and storage.

Local tips

Pick after the dew has dried and cover the kapas the same evening. If you sell to a ginner rather than CCI, ask for the moisture and trash figures at the weighbridge and photograph the sample before it leaves. For mustard, clean the seed at the farm — oil millers pay for cleanliness and dry seed.

Haryana: registration & rules recap

Like Punjab, Haryana procures through arhtiyas with DBT to the farmer's bank account. Keep the J-Form (purchase) and weigh slip safe until payment clears.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is cotton priced at Hisar mandi?
Hisar's kapas is priced on staple length, trash and moisture, and the ginner applies his own discount for the last two. A single-variety lot picked dry clears at a different rate from a mixed one, so keep the varieties separate at the farm rather than sorting at the gate.
How do I sell cotton at MSP through CCI in Hisar?
CCI's Hisar purchase is a separate transaction from the yard auction: register on the CCI portal with the land record and bank details, then take the token for the notified centre. The centre's daily capacity decides whether your load is taken today or sent back.
Why is my cotton weight cut after the sale?
Hisar's ginneries deduct for moisture, trash and staple after the sale, and the deduction is applied to the bale weight rather than the kapas you sold. Ask for the moisture percentage at the yard weighbridge and keep a sealed sample, because a dispute raised after ginning has almost no route.
What is the mustard rate at Hisar?
Mustard trades on the day's arrivals and oil miller demand, so the rate moves. Check the Agmarknet page for Hisar APMC for the modal rate, and treat a phone quote as indicative until the seed is weighed.
Does Hisar mandi procure wheat at MSP?
Wheat at Hisar goes through the notified procurement agencies — HAFED and the co-operatives — not through the open auction. Register the plot, carry the J-form and Aadhaar, and note that cotton, Hisar's other big line, has no such support and is bought by ginners at the open rate.
Is Hisar mandi listed on eNAM?
Hisar is on eNAM, but the arhtiya system still runs the MSP grain and the ginners run the cotton, so the portal is a price check rather than a place to sell. Watch the eNAM arrival figure for cotton in the peak weeks — it tells you whether to bring the lot now or hold.
