Karnal Grain Market — Wheat, Paddy & Basmati Selling Guide (Haryana)
Karnal is a grain yard first and a basmati town second, and the two trades behave very differently: wheat and common paddy go through MSP procurement with an arhtiya and a J-form, while basmati is bought privately by rice millers on grain length and moisture. Knowing which queue your lot belongs in is the first decision at this gate.

MSP CalculatorHaryana procures through licensed arhtiyas, with HAFED, the state cooperative agencies and FCI lifting the stock and payment going by DBT into the farmer's bank account. The arhtiya books the lot, arranges labour and files the papers. Karnal's rice mills and basmati traders are the private side of the same market, and they price on their own terms.
Wheat in the rabi season, common paddy and basmati in kharif. Wheat is judged on moisture and shrivelled grain; paddy on moisture and chaff; basmati on grain length, moisture and variety purity. The catalog's season pattern for Haryana — paddy October to November, wheat April to May — is the window to plan around.

Documents you need
- Aadhaar of the seller, matching the land record
- Land record (fard) for the plot
- Bank passbook or cancelled cheque linked to Aadhaar
- J-form and gate entry from the arhtiya
- Weighment and quality slips
Important warnings
- • Basmati is not procured at MSP. A basmati lot sent into the MSP queue is priced as common paddy, which is usually a large loss.
- • Moisture is read by the buyer's meter at the weighbridge. Once the lot is tipped it cannot be re-sampled, so dry at the farm.
- • If you owe the arhtiya money, the sale proceeds can be adjusted against those dues — settle or clarify the account before the season starts.
- • Commission, market fee and labour are three separate deductions. Ask for each as its own line on the bill.
- • Legal commission rate: Statutory up to 2.5%; Centre pays fixed ~Rs.50.75/qtl wheat, ~Rs.50.61/qtl paddy from RMS 2026-27 — verify current notification.
How to sell your crop at Karnal Grain Market
- 1
Decide the channel before harvest: MSP wheat or common paddy through an arhtiya, or basmati to a private miller.
- 2
Dry the lot to the prescribed moisture — around 12% for wheat and 17% for paddy — because moisture is the first deduction at the weighbridge.
- 3
Take the J-form and gate entry from the arhtiya and note the lot and trolley numbers yourself.
- 4
Stay for the weighment and collect the slip before the lot is tipped.
- 5
Read the quality report at sampling, and ask for a re-sample if the reading looks wrong.
- 6
Follow the payment into your bank account and keep the J-form until it is credited.
Say 100 quintals of wheat at ₹2,500 a quintal — ₹2,50,000 gross. A 2% quality cut for moisture is ₹5,000, labour and bag charges about ₹1,500, leaving roughly ₹2,43,500, or ₹2,435 a quintal. The same 100 quintals sold as basmati paddy to a miller at a higher rate can pay more, but only if the grain length and moisture meet the miller's spec — otherwise it is common paddy at a common price.
Local tips
Keep basmati and common paddy in separate trolleys from the field onwards. Ask the arhtiya which agency is lifting that week before you load, and photograph the J-form and weighment slip as soon as they are issued — a missing slip is the usual reason a payment gets stuck.

Like Punjab, Haryana procures through arhtiyas with DBT to the farmer's bank account. Keep the J-Form (purchase) and weigh slip safe until payment clears.
