Amritsar Grain Market — Wheat & Paddy Selling Guide Near the Border (Punjab)

Amritsar's grain market handles the wheat and paddy of Punjab's border belt, and it carries more FCI storage than most yards in the state. Winters here are cold and foggy, which is good for drying grain and bad for trolley queues: a December morning can hold a loaded trolley at the gate for hours.

The yard is arhtiya-run, with the same agencies lifting MSP stocks — PUNGRAIN, PUNSUP, Markfed, the state warehousing corporation and FCI. Because the district borders Pakistan, a large share of the state's buffer stock sits in godowns around the city, and that is what decides how fast your lot is lifted and paid for. The city's flour mills also buy outside the MSP window.

Wheat April to May, paddy October to November, with a little maize and pulses. Border-belt wheat is usually clean and dry because of the cold, dry harvest weather, so quality cuts here are often smaller than in the humid east. Paddy is the risky crop: an early October harvest that meets rain can arrive wet and be cut hard.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar of the seller
  • Land record for the plot
  • Aadhaar-linked bank account details
  • J-form and gate entry
  • Weighment and quality slips

Important warnings

  • • Border-district godowns absorb a large share of the state's buffer stock, so a storage shortage in a big year slows lifting and pushes payment out by weeks.
  • • Fog and cold delay drying. Grain harvested late and loaded damp is cut on quality, and no argument at the gate reverses the sampler's reading.
  • • Palledari and bag charges are per bag and are deducted without much explanation — get the rate in writing before unloading.
  • • Payments released to a bank account whose name does not match the land record are the slowest to resolve. Check the spelling before the season, not after.
  • • Legal commission rate: Statutory up to 2.5% (Punjab rules); Centre pays fixed ~Rs.50.75/qtl wheat, ~Rs.50.61/qtl paddy from RMS 2026-27 — verify current cost sheet.

How to sell your crop at Amritsar Grain Market

  1. 1

Book your arhtiya and confirm which agency is lifting in the week you plan to arrive — lifting schedules decide your waiting time.

  2. 2

Harvest and dry to the prescribed moisture; in a foggy December, grain dries slowly, so start earlier than you think.

  3. 3

Take the J-form and gate entry, and note the lot and trolley numbers.

  4. 4

Stay for the weighment. Gross, tare and net are read at the yard, and the slip is issued there, not later.

  5. 5

Attend the sampling and read the quality report before the lot is tipped.

  6. 6

Follow the payment into your bank account and keep the J-form till it is credited.

Say 100 quintals of wheat at ₹2,500 a quintal — ₹2,50,000 gross. Cold, dry weather keeps the quality cut at about 1%, ₹2,500, and palledari and bags take roughly ₹1,500, so you net about ₹2,46,000, or ₹2,460 a quintal. If a rainy harvest pushed the cut to 2.5% instead, the same lot would return about ₹2,36,000 — a ₹10,000 difference decided entirely in the field, before the trolley ever left.

Local tips

In December, load only what you can get weighed the same day; a trolley held overnight in fog can pick up moisture and lose a grade. Keep a photograph of the quality report — in a border-district yard with large FCI stocks, delays are common and the report is the only proof of what your lot was when it was accepted.

Punjab: registration & rules recap

Arhtiya-based procurement: the farmer sells through a licensed arhtiya who handles weighing, payment and bank settlement. For MSP wheat/paddy you need your land record and bank account linked for direct payment (DBT). The state also asks farmers to complete land mapping through their arhtiya before the season, and landowners can check the mapping on the Mandi Board portal emandikaran-pb.in.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the wheat procurement season at Amritsar?
Wheat procurement in Punjab, Amritsar included, runs roughly April to May, with paddy following in October and November. Dates are notified each season, so confirm the current window with your arhtiya or the Punjab Mandi Board before you harvest for the mandi.
Why is payment slow at Amritsar mandi sometimes?
Payment follows lifting into godowns and the release of funds, and this belt carries a large share of the state's buffer stock. When godowns are full, lifting slows, and the payment queue lengthens. Keep the J-form and the weighment slip and follow up with the agency named on it.
What documents do I need for MSP wheat at Amritsar?
Aadhaar, the land record for the plot, an Aadhaar-linked bank account in the seller's name, the J-form from your arhtiya and the weighment slip. The Aadhaar name and the land record must match.
Can I sell maize or pulses at Amritsar grain market?
Small volumes of maize and pulses do come through, but the yard's main book is wheat and paddy and the MSP machinery is built around them. For a large maize or pulse lot, confirm with the market committee that a buyer pool exists that week.
How much commission does an arhtiya take in Amritsar?
Amritsar's arhtiya commission on MSP grain is capped by the state, and the Centre's own commission is paid separately, so a single 'total' figure hides two different charges. Ask for the cost sheet and check the palledari line, which is the labour charge and not part of the commission.
Is Amritsar grain market on eNAM?
The yard is on the eNAM portal, but procurement here still runs through arhtiyas and government agencies at the gate. Use eNAM to check the day's rates rather than to sell online.
