Sangrur Grain Market — Paddy, Basmati & Cotton Selling Guide (Punjab)
Sangrur is one of Punjab's paddy-heaviest districts, and its grain market shows it: from October the yard fills with paddy trolleys, and the district's rice millers are close enough to buy what the MSP window cannot absorb. Pockets of the district also grow basmati, which is a private sale and a completely different price from common paddy.

MSP CalculatorCommon paddy moves through arhtiyas to PUNGRAIN, PUNSUP, Markfed and FCI at MSP. Basmati is bought by private millers and exporters on grain length, moisture and aroma, and it is not procured at MSP — sending basmati into an MSP queue is the single most expensive mistake a grower here can make. Cotton from the southern part of the district moves to ginners.
Paddy October to November, with basmati harvested around the same weeks and sold privately, and cotton from October to January in the Malwa south. Paddy is judged on moisture and chaff, basmati on grain length and moisture, cotton on staple and trash. The three crops have three different buyers and three different pricing languages.

Documents you need
- Aadhaar of the seller
- Land record for the plot
- Aadhaar-linked bank account for MSP paddy
- J-form and gate entry for MSP lots
- The mill's purchase bill for basmati or cotton
Important warnings
- • Basmati is not procured at MSP. A basmati lot sent into the MSP queue is priced as common paddy, often at half its value.
- • Private millers know the MSP queue is long in a heavy paddy year, and their basmati quotes tighten exactly then.
- • Moisture above the limit is cut or rejected on both channels; a wet basmati lot also loses its aroma premium.
- • Mixing two basmati varieties, or basmati with common paddy, downgrades the whole lot to the cheaper grade.
- • Legal commission rate: Statutory up to 2.5% (Punjab rules); Centre pays fixed ~Rs.50.75/qtl wheat, ~Rs.50.61/qtl paddy from RMS 2026-27 — verify current cost sheet.
How to sell your crop at Sangrur Grain Market
- 1
Separate basmati from common paddy before you load. They cannot travel in the same trolley without one of them being priced wrong.
- 2
For basmati, talk to the mill first: agree grain length, moisture limit and rate, and get it on paper.
- 3
For common paddy, get the J-form and gate entry from your arhtiya and note the lot number.
- 4
Dry to the prescribed moisture — about 17% for paddy — before either channel.
- 5
Attend the weighment and sampling, and take the slips yourself.
- 6
For cotton, grade by staple, keep it dry and ask for the trash and moisture reading at the weighbridge.
Take 50 quintals of common paddy at ₹2,300 a quintal — ₹1,15,000 gross — with a 1.5% moisture cut and about ₹900 in palledari, leaving roughly ₹1,12,550. The same 50 quintals of basmati at ₹3,600 a quintal would gross ₹1,80,000, with mill deductions of perhaps ₹4,000, leaving about ₹1,76,000. The crop is worth nearly 60% more, but only if it is kept separate, dried properly and sold to a mill rather than into the MSP queue.
Local tips
Decide the basmati lot before harvest: if it is going to a mill, harvest at the mill's moisture spec and never mix it with common paddy in the trolley. For common paddy, the paddy rush means morning arrival is everything. Keep the mill's bill for a basmati sale and the J-form for an MSP lot in separate files — the two payments arrive on completely different clocks.

Punjab: registration & rules recap
Arhtiya-based procurement: the farmer sells through a licensed arhtiya who handles weighing, payment and bank settlement. For MSP wheat/paddy you need your land record and bank account linked for direct payment (DBT). The state also asks farmers to complete land mapping through their arhtiya before the season, and landowners can check the mapping on the Mandi Board portal emandikaran-pb.in.
