Ludhiana Grain Market — Wheat, Paddy & the Mill Buyers Next Door (Punjab)
Ludhiana's grain market sits inside Punjab's biggest industrial city, and that changes who bids for your crop: beside the MSP agencies there are roller-flour mills, besan units and feed makers within a few kilometres of the gate. A clean, dry, uniform lot can therefore be sold on the open market instead of queueing for procurement.

MSP CalculatorThe yard runs on the arhtiya system like the rest of Punjab, but the buyer pool is wider than a purely rural mandi's. PUNGRAIN, PUNSUP, Markfed and FCI take MSP wheat and paddy; private millers buy for milling and blending, usually at a spread below MSP but with faster and simpler paperwork. That spread is the trade-off you are managing: MSP is a floor with a queue, the mill is a price with a phone call.
Wheat April to May and paddy October to November, with the paddy fortnight the busiest of the year. Wheat is judged on moisture and grain lustre, paddy on moisture and chaff. Because millers are close, a lot with uniform grain and low moisture often gets a second bid here that it would not get in a smaller yard.

Documents you need
- Aadhaar of the seller
- Land record for the plot
- Bank passbook or cancelled cheque, Aadhaar-linked for MSP
- J-form and gate entry for MSP, or the mill's purchase bill for a private sale
- Weighment and moisture slips
Important warnings
- • A mill's quote is not the MSP and carries no government guarantee. Agree the rate and the weighing basis before the lot is unloaded, or you are selling at whatever the mill decides after the fact.
- • Moisture is read by the buyer's meter. Ask to see the reading and the scale, and do not accept a verbal percentage.
- • The open-market spread below MSP can be wider than the value of the time you save. Do the arithmetic per quintal, not per trolley.
- • In the paddy rush, private buyers know the yard is full and the queue is long. That is exactly when their quote is lowest.
- • Legal commission rate: Statutory up to 2.5% (Punjab rules); Centre pays fixed ~Rs.50.75/qtl wheat, ~Rs.50.61/qtl paddy from RMS 2026-27 — verify current cost sheet.
How to sell your crop at Ludhiana Grain Market
- 1
Decide the channel first: MSP through an arhtiya, or a direct sale to a mill or trader. The price and the payment clock are different.
- 2
Dry and clean the lot to the prescribed moisture before you load — millers discount wet grain even faster than the procurement window does.
- 3
If going the MSP route, get the J-form and gate entry from your arhtiya and note the lot number.
- 4
If going to a mill, get the rate, the weighing terms and the payment date in writing or on WhatsApp before the trolley leaves.
- 5
Watch the weighment and the moisture reading, and ask for the slip for both.
- 6
Keep the bill or J-form until the money is credited, and check the credited amount against the rate you agreed.
Take 100 quintals of paddy. In the MSP window you might book at ₹2,300 a quintal — ₹2,30,000 gross — with a 1.5% moisture cut of ₹3,450 and palledari of about ₹1,800, leaving roughly ₹2,24,750, paid after lifting. A mill offering ₹2,240 a quintal on the same day pays ₹2,24,000 but may settle in a week with no gate queue. The two are nearly equal on paper; the difference is the waiting, the paperwork and how badly you need the money this month.
Local tips
Ludhiana rewards a graded lot more than a big one. If you can supply the same grain to the same mill twice, ask for a standing rate rather than a one-off quote — repeat sellers get the better spread. Keep the moisture slip from the mill; if the payment is later short, that slip is the only record of what was actually bought.

Punjab: registration & rules recap
Arhtiya-based procurement: the farmer sells through a licensed arhtiya who handles weighing, payment and bank settlement. For MSP wheat/paddy you need your land record and bank account linked for direct payment (DBT). The state also asks farmers to complete land mapping through their arhtiya before the season, and landowners can check the mapping on the Mandi Board portal emandikaran-pb.in.
