Howrah Wholesale Market — Potato, Onion & Vegetable Selling Guide

Howrah is the west bank of the Kolkata conurbation, and its produce trade exists because of the river crossing: a lorry that lands here can be in a Kolkata shop the same morning. Potato, onion and vegetables are the main lines, and the district works through both regulated market committee yards and a large private wholesale cluster on the NH-6 side.

Howrah's wholesale trade sits alongside West Bengal's regulated system — WBSAMB supervises the RMCs, principal yards and 515 sub-market yards — but most of the district's vegetable business runs through wholesale markets and cold stores rather than an auction floor. That distinction matters to a grower: at an RMC yard there is a lot number, a weighbridge and a market fee paid by the trader through e-Permit; at a wholesale market there is a negotiated deal and a bill. Know which one you are standing in before you unload.

Potato is the anchor crop, harvested from late December and then held in cold storage through the summer. Onion arrives both from the local crop and from Maharashtra's Nashik belt, and vegetables come in daily from the Hooghly and Howrah growing belts. Potato is judged on size, skin and freedom from greening; onion on bulb size, skin and neck tightness. Neither has an MSP, so the cold-store release calendar drives the price as much as the harvest does.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
  • Land record for the plot the produce came from
  • Bank passbook in the farmer's own name
  • Weighment slip from the yard or the trader
  • Cold-storage receipt, if the potato was stored before sale

Important warnings

  • • Potato has no MSP — in a heavy year the price can fall below the cost of production, and no agency will step in.
  • • Cold storage is a bet, not a saving: rent plus 10–20% shrinkage has to be beaten by the price rise before you gain anything.
  • • A private wholesale market has no market committee weighbridge, so a disputed weight has no appeal route.
  • • Onion prices crash when the Nashik arrivals and the local crop land together — check the arrival trend before holding stock.
  • • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~1%; commission ~2% for foodgrains — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Howrah Wholesale Market

  1. 1

Decide the channel first — an RMC yard with a weighbridge and a lot number, or a private wholesale market with a negotiated deal.

  2. 2

For potato, grade by size before bagging; a mixed-size bag is priced at the smallest tuber in it.

  3. 3

If you are storing rather than selling, agree the cold-store rent and the expected shrinkage in writing before the bags go in.

  4. 4

Weigh at the yard or the trader's weighbridge, and take the slip the same day.

  5. 5

Get the rate and every deduction on a bill before the load leaves your sight.

  6. 6

Keep the bill, the weighment slip and the cold-store receipt until the payment is credited.

Take 100 quintals of potato at ₹1,100 a quintal — ₹1,10,000 gross. Commission at about 2% is ₹2,200, hamali and bagging about ₹2,000, transport ₹3,000, leaving roughly ₹1,02,800, or ₹1,028 a quintal. Now suppose you stored the same lot for five months at ₹120 a quintal rent and lost 15% to shrinkage: 85 quintals left, and at ₹1,400 that is ₹1,19,000 gross, less ₹12,000 rent — about ₹1,07,000 net. Storage paid, but only just, and only because the price rose 27%.

Local tips

In Howrah the cold-store calendar matters more than the harvest date. Potato released early in the season usually clears better than the rush when every store empties at once. Grade by size before bagging, because the difference between a 45 mm and a mixed bag is a real rate difference. For onion, watch the Nashik arrival figures — Howrah follows that market, it does not lead it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Howrah matter for potato if the crop grows elsewhere?
Because Howrah and the adjoining Hooghly belt hold a large share of West Bengal's potato cold stores and sit on the road into Kolkata. A lot released here reaches the city's retailers the same morning, so this is where the state's stored crop is priced for the Kolkata market.
Does potato have an MSP in West Bengal?
No. Potato is not on the MSP list, so there is no procurement agency to fall back on. In a glut year the yard price can sit below the cost of production, and cold storage only helps if the later price beats the rent and the shrinkage.
How much does cold storage cost and how much weight is lost?
Rent is charged per bag or per quintal for the season, and weight loss of roughly 10–20% over the storage period is normal. Ask the store for both figures in writing before the bags go in, then work out the break-even price before you commit.
Is the Howrah vegetable trade regulated or private?
Both exist side by side. Howrah district has regulated market committee yards where you get a lot number, a weighbridge and a market fee paid by the trader through e-Permit, and it also has private wholesale markets where the deal is negotiated and the bill is your only record.
Where does the onion sold in Howrah come from?
From the local West Bengal crop and, for most of the year, from Maharashtra's Nashik belt, which reaches Howrah by road. That means the Howrah onion rate usually follows Nashik rather than setting its own, so check the Nashik trend before you hold stock.
Is the Howrah market on eNAM?
No, this market is not linked to eNAM, so there is no online bid to compare against. Check the district's reference rate on Agmarknet before loading and treat the local auction or the trader's offer as the actual market.
