Koley Market, Sealdah — Kolkata's Wholesale Vegetable, Fruit & Fish Guide
Koley Market stands a few minutes from Sealdah station and has been Kolkata's largest wholesale market for fresh produce since 1933. It is one of 54 wholesale markets in the city, and it is not a regulated market committee yard — so there is no market-committee weighbridge to appeal to if the weight is disputed. What you get instead is the city's morning price, set by how many retailers turn up before dawn.

MSP CalculatorKoley is a municipal wholesale market in central Kolkata, and it sits outside the structure WBSAMB supervises — 22 regulated market committees, 22 principal market yards and 515 sub-market yards across the state. Vegetables, fruit, fish and meat all trade here, each with its own buyer pool: retailers from the neighbourhood markets, hawkers, small shops and hotel suppliers. If you want a channel with published rules instead of a negotiated one, West Bengal runs two: the 186 Krishak Bazars WBSAMB has built for direct farmer-to-consumer sale, and Sufal Bangla, the state retail chain that buys vegetables and fruit for its own outlets.
Vegetables run all year with a clear winter peak from November to February — cauliflower, cabbage, beans, peas and leafy greens — alongside potato, onion and tomato. Fruit moves by season: banana and apple for most of the year, mango from May. Fish is a major line, both freshwater and iced marine, judged on gill colour, eye clarity and whether the ice is still holding. None of these carries an MSP, and fish and leafy vegetables lose value within hours of leaving the farm.

Documents you need
- Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
- Bank details in the seller's own name
- Weighment slip issued by the trader
- Bill showing the rate and each deduction separately
- Krishak Bazar allotment slip, if you are selling through that channel
Important warnings
- • Koley is a municipal wholesale market, not an RMC yard — there is no market committee weighbridge and no notified commission to appeal to, so the bill is your only record.
- • Fish and leafy vegetables spoil within hours, so a late arrival is a straight discount, not a delay.
- • The market is congested and handling damage is real — pack to survive the crush, not just the journey.
- • No MSP applies to vegetables, fruit or fish here; the morning price is the only price you will get.
- • Legal commission rate: Market fee ~1%; commission ~2% for foodgrains — verify the notified rate.
How to sell your crop at Koley Market Kolkata
- 1
Grade and pack at the farm — one size and one grade per crate or basket, because a mixed lot is re-sorted at your cost.
- 2
Reach the market in the early hours; the retailers who set the day's price have usually finished buying by mid-morning.
- 3
Agree the rate and every deduction before the lot is unloaded, and have them written on a bill.
- 4
Weigh in your presence where you can, and keep your own count of crates against the trader's.
- 5
Keep the bill and the weighment slip together — at a municipal market these are the only record you have.
- 6
Follow the payment into your own bank account, and note the date you were promised.
Take 20 quintals of mixed vegetables at ₹1,200 a quintal — ₹24,000 gross. Trader margin at about 3% is ₹720, hamali and crates about ₹600, transport ₹800, leaving roughly ₹21,880, or ₹1,094 a quintal. Arriving after the first buying round can cost ₹100 a quintal — about ₹2,000 on the same load. On a perishable crop that single hour is worth more than any argument at settlement.
Local tips
At Koley the clock and the crate decide the price. Reach before dawn, grade by size, and pack strong enough to take the crush of a wholesale floor. Keep your own crate count, because nobody else will. If the trader route is not working for you, ask the district agricultural marketing office about a Krishak Bazar stall or a Sufal Bangla collection point — both cut out the commission agent entirely.
