Agra Mandi — Potato, Wheat & Vegetables in the Potato Belt (UP)

Agra's mandi is potato country. The district grows and stores potatoes on a scale that shapes the whole local trade, so the yard's year turns on the potato crop, with wheat and vegetables filling the rest of the calendar. Cold stores around the district hold stock into the off-season, and that storage decides whether a farmer sells at harvest or later.

The yard runs through licensed arhtiyas under the state mandi samiti system, with commission commonly around 2.5% on regulated commodities and labour and weighing charged separately. Potato is largely a private trade between farmers, cold-store owners and traders; wheat goes through MSP procurement in its season.

Potato is the main crop, harvested in the winter and stored in cold stores for later sale; wheat comes in rabi and vegetables run through the year. Potato is graded on size, skin quality and freedom from rot, wheat on moisture, vegetables on freshness. In a glut year potato prices can fall below the cost of production.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
  • Bank account details in the seller's name
  • Land record, for wheat sold under MSP procurement
  • Weighment slip issued at the yard
  • Cold-store receipt, if the crop is stored

Important warnings

  • • Potato has no MSP. In a glut year the market price can fall below the cost of production, and the mandi cannot protect you from that.
  • • Cold-store rent and shrinkage are real costs. Work out the break-even price before storing, not after.
  • • Unofficial deductions — dami, galli, labour — should be on the bill; question anything that is not a notified charge.
  • • Potato lots are graded on size, and a mixed lot is priced at the smallest size in it.
  • • Legal commission rate: 2.5% arhtiya commission is common on procurement — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Agra Mandi

  1. 1

Grade potato by size before bagging — a mixed lot is priced at the smallest and worst in it.

  2. 2

Decide between selling at harvest and storing in a cold store; storage has a rent and a weight-loss cost.

  3. 3

For a spot sale, get the rate and deductions on the bill, and watch the weighment.

  4. 4

For wheat, take the arhtiya's bill for the MSP route and note the lot number.

  5. 5

Check the cold store's receipt terms carefully if you store, including rent and shrinkage.

  6. 6

Keep the bill or cold-store receipt until the payment clears.

Say 100 quintals of potato at ₹900 a quintal — ₹90,000 gross. Commission at 2.5% is ₹2,250, labour and bags about ₹2,000, transport ₹1,500, leaving roughly ₹84,250, or ₹842 a quintal. Storing the same crop for four months at ₹120 a quintal rent, with a 5% shrinkage, only pays if the later price clears roughly ₹1,100 — the arithmetic has to be done before the cold store, not after.

Local tips

Grade potato at the farm and decide the storage question with a pencil: rent plus shrinkage plus the interest on the money locked up. If you store, read the receipt terms for shrinkage and rent before signing, and photograph the receipt. For wheat, the MSP window is the safer route.

Uttar Pradesh: registration & rules recap

Wheat/paddy MSP procurement uses a token/registration at the mandi and DBT to bank accounts. Sugarcane runs on a separate cane-area system — payment is per the state advisory price (SAP), not the mandi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are potato prices so low at Agra mandi sometimes?
Agra sits inside UP's potato belt, and a heavy year across the state puts more cold-store stock on the market than the upcountry buyers take, so the rate can fall under the cost of production. Potato is outside MSP, so nothing intervenes — staggered release is the grower's only lever.
Should I store potato in a cold store or sell at harvest?
Agra's cold stores charge per bag for the season, and the shrinkage over five months runs high enough to matter. Work out the break-even from the store's own rent and shrinkage figures, then compare it with what the forward trade is quoting for the release month.
What commission is charged at Agra mandi?
In Agra the commission is not one rate: potato and vegetables, which dominate this yard, are charged at a higher rate than wheat, and the mandi fee sits on top. Ask for the rate for your specific commodity before unloading, and get the labour charge as a separate line.
Does Agra mandi procure wheat at MSP?
Wheat is procured at MSP in Agra district through the mandi samiti and the state's procurement agencies, but the wheat window is separate from the potato and vegetable trade that fills this yard. Register with the procuring agency, not the commission agent, if you want the MSP route.
How is potato graded at Agra?
Agra's potato is sorted on size, skin and freedom from rot, and the yard's buyers work to a size band rather than a single weight. A bag holding small and large tubers together is paid at the small end, so size-grading at the farm is the difference between a fair rate and a poor one.
Is Agra mandi listed on eNAM?
Agra is on eNAM, but the potato trade that fills this yard is a private buyer-seller business and never reaches the portal. The eNAM rate is useful for the wheat lots that come through the samiti, not for potato.
