Varanasi Rajatalab Mandi — Mango, Vegetables & Grain Selling Guide (UP)

Rajatalab is Varanasi's main wholesale yard, and its most distinctive trade is mango: the district's Langra and other local varieties arrive in the summer months and are sold by grade, size and box rather than by weight alone. Vegetables and grain move through the same yard for the rest of the year.

The mandi works through licensed arhtiyas under the state mandi samiti system. Mango is a private trade — there is no MSP and no procurement window — so the price is set by the day's buyers, who grade on variety, size, colour and ripeness. Commission commonly runs around 2.5% on regulated commodities, with labour and packing charged separately.

Mango in the summer, vegetables through the year, and grain in the rabi and kharif windows. Mango is judged on variety, size, colour and freedom from blemish, and it is often sold in boxes by count; vegetables on freshness and size; grain on moisture and cleanliness.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
  • Bank account details in the seller's name
  • Land record for grain sold under MSP procurement
  • Weighment slip issued at the yard
  • The arhtiya's bill showing rate and deductions

Important warnings

  • • Mango has no MSP. The rate is whatever the day's buyers offer, so grading and timing are the only levers you control.
  • • The unit of sale matters: a rate quoted per box and a rate quoted per quintal are not comparable, and mixing the two is a common source of dispute.
  • • Bruised or over-ripe fruit is discounted heavily; packing decides more of the price than the negotiation does.
  • • Unofficial deductions — dami, galli, labour — should be written on the bill and questioned if they are not notified charges.
  • • Legal commission rate: 2.5% arhtiya commission is common on procurement — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Varanasi Rajatalab Mandi

  1. 1

Grade mango by variety and size before packing, and keep varieties separate — a mixed box is priced at the weakest fruit in it.

  2. 2

Pack in boxes or crates that protect the fruit through the journey; bruising is a discount at the gate.

  3. 3

Reach the yard early in the season, when the buyer pool for the new crop is deepest.

  4. 4

Weigh and take the slip, and for boxed fruit confirm whether the rate is per box or per quintal.

  5. 5

Get the rate and every deduction written on the bill.

  6. 6

Collect payment on the agreed date and keep the bill until it clears.

Say 40 boxes of mango at ₹700 a box — ₹28,000 gross. Commission at 2.5% is ₹700, labour and packing about ₹900, transport ₹1,200, leaving roughly ₹25,200. If the same fruit is quoted per quintal instead and each box weighs about 10 kg, the 400 kg must clear roughly ₹63 a kg to match — which is why the unit has to be fixed before the lot is unloaded.

Local tips

In mango season the early lots of a well-known local variety get the deepest buyer interest. Grade by size, pack in single-layer boxes to avoid bruising, and agree whether the rate is per box or per quintal before the truck is unloaded. Ask the arhtiya which buyers are active that week.

Uttar Pradesh: registration & rules recap

Wheat/paddy MSP procurement uses a token/registration at the mandi and DBT to bank accounts. Sugarcane runs on a separate cane-area system — payment is per the state advisory price (SAP), not the mandi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mangoes are sold at Varanasi Rajatalab mandi?
The district's local varieties, with Langra the best known, arrive in the summer months. The yard also trades other local mango varieties and vegetables through the year. Confirm the current season's arrival pattern with the mandi samiti.
Is mango procured at MSP in Varanasi?
No. Mango is a private trade with no MSP and no procurement window, so the price is set by the day's buyers on variety, size, colour and ripeness. There is no agency to fall back on if the auction is thin.
Is mango sold per box or per quintal here?
Both happen, and the two are not comparable. Fix the unit before the lot is unloaded, and write it on the bill, because a per-box quote and a per-quintal quote can differ sharply once box weights are counted.
What commission is charged at Varanasi mandi?
Varanasi's commission on regulated commodities is around 2.5%, and the mango and vegetable lines add a packing charge that grain does not. Ask for the packing line separately, because it is often folded into the commission figure.
Can I sell wheat or paddy at MSP in Varanasi?
Varanasi's wheat and paddy are procured through the mandi samiti and the state agencies with a token and a DBT payment. The district's mango trade is entirely private and seasonal, so a mango sale never enters the procurement system.
Is Varanasi Rajatalab mandi listed on eNAM?
Varanasi's Rajatalab yard is on eNAM, but its mango and vegetable business is a floor auction, and the mango season is short enough that no grower waits on a portal bid. Use eNAM for the grain reference rate.
