Kanpur Naubasta Mandi — Vegetables, Grain & Spices Selling Guide (UP)

Naubasta is Kanpur's main wholesale yard, and it trades the way a big industrial city eats: vegetables and fruit in the early hours, grain and spices in larger lots through the day. Most of what arrives is sold to retailers, hotel suppliers and small processors inside the city rather than shipped out of the district.

The mandi runs under Uttar Pradesh's mandi samiti system, with licensed commission agents (arhtiyas) handling the sale and the paperwork. Commission is commonly around 2.5% on regulated commodities and is supposed to be shown on the bill, but a farmer should expect to see other heads — dami, galli, labour — and should ask what each one is for.

Vegetables and fruit come in daily from the Kanpur Dehat, Unnao and Fatehpur belts; grain arrives in larger lots; spices move in smaller volumes through specialist traders. Vegetables are judged on freshness and size, grain on moisture and cleanliness, spices on colour, aroma and moisture.

Documents you need

  • Aadhaar or voter ID of the seller
  • Bank account details in the seller's name
  • Land record, for grain sold under MSP procurement
  • Weighment slip issued at the yard
  • The arhtiya's bill showing rate and each deduction

Important warnings

  • • Ask what dami, galli and labour actually are before they are deducted. These unofficial heads are the most common complaint in UP mandis, and they should appear on the bill.
  • • Vegetables have no MSP and no storage life — a slow auction means a lower price or spoilage.
  • • Commission above the notified rate can be taken to the mandi samiti; keep the bill as proof.
  • • Grain moisture is read once at the weighbridge, so dry the lot before loading.
  • • Legal commission rate: 2.5% arhtiya commission is common on procurement — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Kanpur Naubasta Mandi

  1. 1

Grade and pack vegetables at the farm; one size and one grade per crate or bag.

  2. 2

Reach the yard in the early hours for the vegetable auction, and take the weighment slip before the sale.

  3. 3

For grain, get the arhtiya's bill and note the lot number and the weighment.

  4. 4

Ask for the rate and every deduction to be written on the bill, not agreed verbally.

  5. 5

Watch the weighbridge for both vegetables and grain, and keep your own count.

  6. 6

Collect the payment on the agreed date and keep the bill until it clears.

Say 20 quintals of tomato at ₹1,000 a quintal — ₹20,000 gross. Commission at 2.5% is ₹500, labour about ₹400 and transport ₹800, leaving roughly ₹18,300, or ₹915 a quintal. If an unexplained dami of 1% is added on top, another ₹200 goes — small per lot, but across a season it is the difference between a margin and none.

Local tips

In a city yard the buyer pool is deep but the clock is short: vegetables that arrive after the auction thins out sell at whatever is offered. For grain, the arhtiya's bill is your only record — insist that every deduction is written on it, and photograph it before you leave the yard.

Uttar Pradesh: registration & rules recap

Wheat/paddy MSP procurement uses a token/registration at the mandi and DBT to bank accounts. Sugarcane runs on a separate cane-area system — payment is per the state advisory price (SAP), not the mandi.

Frequently Asked Questions

What commission is charged at Kanpur Naubasta mandi?
Commission on regulated commodities is commonly around 2.5% in Uttar Pradesh, and labour and weighing are charged separately. Ask for the bill with each head written out, and check any charge above the notified rate with the mandi samiti.
What are dami and galli charges in a UP mandi?
They are unofficial deductions that some commission agents add — for handling, cleaning or the trade itself. They are not standard notified charges, so ask what each one covers and insist it appears on the bill. Unexplained deductions can be raised with the mandi samiti.
What time is the vegetable auction at Kanpur?
Kanpur's vegetable bidding opens at first light because the retail sellers move the stock on the same day. Be at the gate before the auction starts; a lot that arrives late meets fewer buyers and a lower rate.
Does Kanpur mandi procure wheat and paddy at MSP?
Kanpur's wheat and paddy procurement runs through the mandi samiti and the state agencies, with a registration or token and payment by DBT. The district's vegetable and spice lines have no procurement route at all, so those lots go to traders on the day's rate.
How do I sell spices at Kanpur mandi?
Spices move through specialist traders rather than the general vegetable auction. Grade by colour, aroma and moisture, agree the rate in writing, and check the weighment yourself — spice lots are small and high-value, so weight errors cost more.
Is Kanpur mandi listed on eNAM?
The yard is listed on the eNAM portal, though the physical auction still decides most sales. Use eNAM for the reference rate on grain rather than as a selling channel of its own.
