Paddy, mustard and tea selling in Assam's regulated markets
Assam regulates trade under the Assam Agricultural Produce and Livestock Marketing (APLM) Act, through Bazar Samitis and regulated markets at Beltola in Guwahati, Nagaon, Dibrugarh and Jorhat. Paddy is the main MSP crop and moves through PACS purchase centres, while tea — the state's largest crop by value — never enters a mandi at all.
Bazar Samiti to DBT — Assam process
Step 1: For paddy at MSP, register at the PACS or purchase centre for your village with land records, Aadhaar and bank passbook. Step 2: Take the procurement slip and deliver within the assigned window. Step 3: For open-market sale, take the lot to the Bazar Samiti and get it weighed at the gate. Step 4: Sell through a licensed commission agent and keep the weighment slip. Step 5: Confirm the DBT credit; if it fails, the token number is what the centre needs.
Guwahati, Nagaon & Jorhat — local selling tips
Beltola is the state's main consumption yard, so it pays for graded vegetables but not for bulk paddy. Nagaon and Jorhat lots move fastest in the dry weeks between monsoons; during flooding, transport itself becomes the constraint. Mustard from Barpeta and Nalbari is cut on moisture, and drying it before the yard is worth more than a higher opening quote.
Flood season and Assam's mandi prices
Assam's arrival calendar is shaped by flooding rather than by price. When the Brahmaputra system floods, roads close, arrivals collapse and yard prices spike — but the farmers holding the crop usually cannot reach the market to benefit. Storage above the flood line and a registered PACS account are the two things that let a grower sell after the water recedes instead of at distress rates during it.

What they don't tell you — know your rights
- • Flood damage disrupts both arrival and prices.
- • Fed-up tea small-growers face lower leaf-rate realisation.
- • Paddy procurement capacity short of production.
- • Protect yourself: always take and keep the official weighment slip (parchi) and the auction bill for every sale — it is your proof in any dispute. Anything charged beyond the legal commission rate can be reported to the Market Committee.
