Jorhat Market Guide — Paddy, Joha Rice & Vegetables in Upper Assam

Jorhat farmers grow both ordinary sali paddy and aromatic joha rice, and they also supply vegetables to the town and to river-island Majuli. Joha rice sells at a premium, but only if the buyer can trust its purity.

Jorhat's wholesale traders and local markets handle paddy, rice and vegetables. They are not on eNAM. Ordinary paddy is meant for procurement centres at MSP. Joha rice, which has a GI tag for Assam, sells to specialty traders, rice mills and directly to customers at a much higher price than ordinary rice.

Sali paddy, including joha, is harvested from November to December. Boro paddy is harvested in May and June. Winter vegetables run from November to February, and monsoon greens from June to September.

Important warnings

  • • Traders sometimes buy joha paddy at ordinary paddy rates. Know the joha premium before you sell.
  • • Mixed or impure joha loses its aroma and price.
  • • Procurement quotas can close early; register as soon as the window opens.
  • • Legal commission rate: Mandi fee ~1%; commission ~1–2% — verify the notified rate.

How to sell your crop at Jorhat Market

  1. 1

Keep joha separate from ordinary paddy from field to bag — mixing destroys the premium.

  2. 2

Mill joha locally if you can, and pack it in labelled 5–10 kg bags for retail buyers.

  3. 3

Sell ordinary paddy at the procurement centre at MSP with your land record and bank details.

  4. 4

Sell vegetables early in the morning to town wholesalers against a written rate.

Say you harvest 10 quintals of joha paddy. Sold as ordinary paddy at ₹2,000 per quintal, it fetches ₹20,000. Milled into about 6 quintals of joha rice and sold at, say, ₹90 per kg, it fetches ₹54,000 before milling and packing costs.

Local tips

Build a list of regular joha customers in Jorhat, Guwahati and beyond. Keep seed pure. Use small branded bags — buyers pay for trust.
